FILE 115
A dim corrugated hangar at night: under a hanging work lamp, an open lead-lined case holds a small triangular metal wafer glowing orange; folders, a reel-to-reel recorder and a radiation meter sit on the bench, and a large disc shape hides under a tarp behind.

Declassified-ish Project NIGHT WAFER · Hangar 3

Element 115

In a lab, element 115 is real, man-made, and gone in less than a second. In UFO lore, a stable version of it powers flying saucers, bends gravity and lives in a lead box in a desert hangar. This file is about the legend. Some of it has been blacked out. You can fix that.

Reader notice. This site is fiction and fun, built on a famous piece of UFO folklore. No real government documents appear here. Every memo, name and agency is invented. Real moscovium does not power anything, and we checked.

Fact vs. lore

In the lab (real)

  • First made in 2003 by a joint Russian and American team at Dubna, by smashing calcium into americium.
  • Officially named moscovium (Mc) in 2016.
  • Only a tiny number of atoms have ever been made, one at a time. Its longest-lived known form lasts under a second.
  • Nobody has ever held a piece of it, and nobody has built anything with it.

In the legend (not real)

  • In 1989 a man claiming to have worked on captured flying saucers at a hidden desert facility described an orange, super-dense element 115 fuel.
  • In the story, a stable isotope sits in a reactor and creates a gravity wave the craft can ride.
  • Fourteen years before anyone made it in a lab, the number 115 had already become UFO shorthand.
  • The legend survives because it is a perfect mystery: specific enough to sound real, impossible to check.
